Taiki Waititi is back for another crazy film, and this one may be his weirdest. An anti-hate satirical piece about Adolf Hitler, this film already has the recipes to be his wackiest yet. If he can get the Marvel fans to adore the Thor franchise after a bad run of films for the character, can he get the general audience to like a movie that focuses on a character like Hitler? Check out the first teaser trailer for JoJo Rabbit below and then continue on to read my reaction.

Director: Taiki Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt For The Wilderpeople)
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Taika Waititi, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant
Plot: A young boy in Hitler's army finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.

This is a small teaser, and there was little to show for this film so far. I liked how it opened up revealing that it was playing at one of the biggest film festivals, Toronto International Film Festival. Not only is this a great festival to play at, but one that is highly influential come awards season. This immediately makes audiences think that there is a chance that this film could be Oscar worthy, even if it's just for the production or costume design.

I love the idea for the film, and it looks like it may still hit an emotional level. It may be an anti-hate satirical piece, but this looks like there is going to be an emotional story between the young boy and his mother, played by Scarlett Johansson. This is the part that gets me excited about this project, alongside the fact that I am a sucker for World War II pieces: fiction, non-fiction, movies or books.

I am not sure what to make of the satirical humourous aspects of the film just yet. I know it is meant to be dark and shocking, but I am not quite sold on the Hitler section from this trailer. I found it to be a little bit too silly and ridiculous, but it may end up working for me in the full context of the film and that particular scene. I just have no idea how a general audience will react to a trailer like this, and whether TV or print will be okay sharing this with a general audience. This looks like a niche film, and whilst this trailer did not reach my level of expectation, I will absolutely check this one out and support Waititi and his creative vision when it is released.

What did you make of this first teaser of JoJo Rabbit? Let me know in the comments below and let's have a discussion.
