Awards Season: Ranking the Best Picture Nominees

by - February 24, 2019

For the first time in history, I have managed to see all eight of the Best Picture nominees at the Oscars. I feel many people are being harsh on these films, as I would actually rate 6/8 of these films a 4.5/5 or 5/5 movie as of this moment. In fact, there is only one movie I really did not like out of the list, and two of the films get a perfect 5/5 score from me. So, how would I rank the films? Starting from the bad, this list will work down to the top spot. These will not be full reviews, as I have reviews of every film linked from my blog here.

8. Vice
This is the only film that I straight up did not like this year, and I question how it got a Best Director nomination over Green Book or A Star is Born. I felt the editing to resemble a PowerPoint presentation too much, the screenwriting felt incredibly cringe at times (especially the Shakespeare section) and overall it is nowhere near the quality that the other films here are. It isn't winning Best Picture, and if it did I would have less faith in the Oscars than before.

7. Black Panther
This is a good film, and this is one of the stronger entries from the MCU. However, the problem with this film getting a Best Picture nomination comes down to looking at other comic book movies. Logan should have been the first comic book movie to get the Best Picture nomination, and I would have put Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse up here as well, certainly above Black Panther. It may be a good film, but this isn't even near the best comic book movie of the year.

6. The Favourite
Just because this film has come #6 on my list does not mean I did not enjoy it, because I did really love this film. It did take me a while to get into the editing style and directing of this film, but I loved the idea of a female driven film based on the history of the 16th-17th century. This film definitely is not for everyone, but there are some standout performances that drive this film to success.

5. Roma
This is the reported front runner to win the Oscar tonight, and it is no shock that it is. The directing and cinematography are near perfection, whilst the throwback to classic Hollywood cinema is beautiful to witness. It is a slow burner to begin and it takes a long time to get into the story, but once you are in you are stuck to the screen. I will not be mad if this one wins Best Picture tonight.

4. Green Book
This is a film that excels in story telling and was an absolute joy to watch. I completely fell for the characters and truly believed the journey that they were going on. I know that some people have problem with the controversies behind the film, but for me it is one of the best screenplays written this year. This deserves all the recognition it is getting.

3. Bohemian Rhapsody
Yes, question all you want but for me this film is that high. It was my second favourite film of 2018 and whilst I know it technically isn't as strong as the majority of the other films, this was the best watch for me. I have already seen this film a total of five times in the cinema, and to me having the joy of story telling and uniting a crowd together is the true celebration of movies.

2. BlacKkKlansman
This is the last film that I needed to watch to complete the list, and what a way to end it off. This film has the best screenplay of the year and some beautiful moments of editing. Spike Lee shows exactly why he is a master of direction here. If I watched it in 2018, it would have been in my top ten of the year list.

1. A Star is Born
Everyone who knows me should know that this is of course on top of my list. Bradley Cooper has been my favourite actor working for years now, and this film to me is a masterpiece. I have seen it twice and I appreciated it even more the second time round. This is a film that made me violently sob at the end, and that was both times round. There is not one thing that I would have changed in this film personally, and it is such a shame that the buzz for this film died quicker than expected to.

Do you agree with my list? What is the best film of the bunch for you? Comment below and let me know your thoughts.
